IS THE PLAN FOR BORO TO GO TO WEMBLEY?
Phil M King, 30 Nov 2009
You can ask for anything at Christmas, can't you? You don't always get it though.
Credit where credit is due. I had a go at Kitson a couple of weeks ago. A couple of decent finishes aren't too bad a start but if he goes and knocks another dozen in, I'll be convinced that we should look to sign him.
Meanwhile, we're dropping further behind the Geordies, further behind the Baggies and further away from form that will even take us into a safe play-off position.
Or is that the plan?
Column Continues Below...
What is the one thing that held Middlesbrough back over all those years?
What is the one hoodoo that even Cardiff didn't lay to rest?
What is the one thing that the Geordies and the Mackems have both managed but we never have?
It is the one thing that we do have the opportunity to put right if things go to plan this year. It is the one thing we'll finally get to do if we finish between third and sixth and triumph over our scheduled rivals in the play-off semi-final.
We have the chance to win at Wembley.
It just hit me today. A day out in London. A visit to the new home of English football. A chance to do what we failed to do at its predecessor. There may be method in the madness of what is going on at present at the Riverside.
I'm not sure whether it's the lateness of the hour, the percentage of alcohol in the blood, or the combination of watching West Ham and Burnley score eight between them whilst listening to next door having a rave, but the possibility of a trip to the capital and at last winning at Wem-ber-ley suddenly makes the Geordies going up automatically almost worth seeing.
Who can remember the teams that came up with Hull City? I can't - all I remember is a glorious volley by Deano and the celebrations afterwards. It's only because the names are new from the following season that I remember who came up alongside Burnley.
I fancy having a bit of that. So, is that Gibbo's plan? Lay the Wembley jinx to rest and give the fans a hell of a day out, one potentially to get somewhere near Cardiff?
This is the train of thought that I will hang on to for the next few weeks and months. Granted, if we end up nearer the third division than the first then it may change but, for the time being, it'll do.
I haven't yet been to the new Wembley. Like many others, I made it to the old Wembley four times during the Nineties.
The first time was in March 1990 for what has become known as the Zenith Data Mickey Mouse Cardboard Cut-Out John Paul George and Ringo Systems Cup.
When I returned seven years later for a League Cup and FA Cup final in quick succession, the same thought hit me. What an 'effin dump and it hasn't changed!
I hope that the new Wembley has better bogs, better bars, better food, better everything. For a stadium with such a history, it was such as disappointment when you actually considered the stadium itself.
Maybe it got away with it because of exactly that - the history and the very occasion of getting to Wembley probably made them complacent. Now, though, I guess modern corporate standards and the demands of the prawn sandwich brigade have driven up the expectations of the 'average' fan.
If anyone has been there, I'd love to hear what you thought of it compared to the old version.
Do I really think we'll get there?
We've got more chance of scraping into the play-offs on current form than we have of going straight up.
But then, if you go up as Champions, you're there to be shot at. If you go up as play-off winners, everyone thinks you're there for the taking and just to make up the numbers.
And look at the starts Hull City and Burnley made over the last two seasons.
Perhaps re-entering the Premier League via the back door isn't such a bad idea after all. It may even give us glory and a fighting chance of staying up. We could do with looking forward to a bit of both at the moment.

Nick Thompson, December 1, 2009 at 9:01 am Love the optimism Phil. You must be one of a rapidly dwindling band of supporters who still think we have an outside chance of promotion. Frankly it would be embarrassing if we did go up. Without MAJOR investment from SG or a rich new Arab sheikh,we would undoubtedly set a new record for the lowest number of points in any division in history. Look at Durham City\'s position in the Unibond Premier League and that could well be us. No,I fear that we have punched above our weight for about 12 years and now we will just have to accept mid table mediocrity in this awful Championship division for the forseeable future. How WGS thinks that the standard in this league is good beats me. He must be comparing it to the SPL!! Enjoyed your optimistic article though. Regards.
