WORLD’S BETTER THAN BEST FOOTBALLER 8-4-08
Louis Spence

Let us make no bones about this. At the moment it looks like a one-horse race. That thoroughbred is Cristiano Ronaldo, the dashing playmaker/striker who brilliantly plies his trade for Manchester United.
Yes I know he goes down faster than a ten dollar ho but this season his form has been so outstanding even committed haters of the diva diver have to admit that this boy is something a bit more than special.
Yes I know girls, he’s rather good looking as well. Beauty and the Beast, Wayne.
In twenty-seven Premiership matches this year he has notched twenty-seven goals. I can quite see him maintaining his goal per game ratio when all is said and done and I can't remember the last time that was done.
He is blessed with exceptional pace, especially when running with the ball. He has two great feet, is excellent in the air and can do things with free kicks that the likes of Beckham can only drool about. Oh yes, he takes penalties rather well too. Well he would, wouldn’t he?
To augment his case as the world’s finest, he also tackles back and plays an astounding number of matches. He keeps himself relatively injury free despite the dogged and sometimes vicious tackles that his constant showboating invites. Look at me, Mama.
In the fantasy leagues (which fairly sum up his ability) he is way ahead of any player in points accrued.
In the Daily Mail’s league, he has 93 points against Fabregas at 53, Gerrard at 52 and Lampard at 46.
As the League's current leading scorer, despite being classed as a midfielder, he is obviously outgunning the brilliant Torres on 69 and Adebayor at 65.
So what of other contenders worldwide?
The perennial favourite Ronaldinho, a natural physical contender for any horse race, is not looking as sharp as of recent years, having been eclipsed in the minds of many experts by the inappropriately named Kaka. The Argentinian Messi is maybe finding the ‘new Maradona’ label a bit onerous and has been knocked back somewhat by injuries.
Football is, of course, a game of opinions but for my money, he is currently streets ahead of anyone and is certainly the player every big club dreams about – hence Real’s recent assertion that they will pay whatever it takes to secure his services.
There are far too few footballers who demand the attention of spectators but this fella has it all in bucketloads.
He is always worth the admission fee alone such is his bewildering array of talents. His stepovers make the likes of Joe Cole and Aaron Lennon look diver booted.
Johann Cruyff rates him a better player than Best or Law in their prime and at the tender age of twenty-three, one can only wonder how much improvement will be made before he fully matures as a player.
I cannot think of a better Manchester United player ever and this of course includes Charlton and Cantona as well as the afore-mentioned.
Have I convinced you about the lad from Madeira?
Piece o’ cake Mister.
