IT'S ALL KICKING OFF 7-4-08
Jeff Winter

With forty-seven goals conceded, the Boro must have kicked off after conceding a goal or for the start of a half getting on for 100 times this season.

Can anyone out there remember us ever retaining procession from a kick-off?

Yesterday we almost lost possession on one and gave away a free kick on another before the ball had even left the centre circle.

The benefit of the kick off is surely that you have possession. So why give it away?

The overhit hump to the left wing often goes over Downing’s head. Even if he or anyone else does get a touch to it, the ball still usually goes out of play or to an opponent.

Alternatively, the hump just goes directly to an opponent.

After yesterday’s brilliant game some might think it unnecessary to bring this up. But surely someone out there might have an opinion on it and perhaps they may even agree with me.

Less likely to agree with me are the usual ref haters who will be quick to castigate Mike Riley’s handling of yesterday's game. I would love to hear your points of view. Email me now through my contact page.

The major decisions went Boro’s way yesterday, including the Taylor handball. You might think differently.

Another crucial handball was the one that was missed in the build-up to the winning Pompey goal in the Cup semi final. Let me know your thoughts via the letters page of my official website.
