BORO IN THE CUP FINAL - 19-2-08

Cup fever is simmering on Teesside.

If Boro beat Sheffield United in the fifth round replay, they are at home to Cardiff in the quarter finals.

Now I am far too long in the tooth to take results for granted (especially being a Boro fan) but if the bookies are right, then Boro will be nicely lined up for a Wembley semi-final.

THE QUARTER FINAL DRAW (with current odds to take the Cup)

Manchester United (11/8) v Portsmouth (11/1)
Bristol Rovers (100/1) v WBA (12/1)
Barnsley (150/1) v Chelsea (11/8)
Boro (8/1) or Sheffield United (66/1) v Cardiff (40/1)

If the next round produces no upsets (and surely we are due one), then the semi-finalists would be:

Boro, Manchester United, Chelsea and West Brom.

If there are upsets (apart from Boro) then so much the better.

We would then wish to avoid the joint favourites but with their penchant for playing weaker sides throughout this competition, even Manchester United and Chelsea could be turned over.

Middlesbrough have recently acquired a very good habit of keeping clean sheets and with an augmented strike-force comprising of seasoned internationals, there is no reason why they cannot notch yet another Cup Final to their recent impressive portfolio.

The only two sides still left in the competition who have never lifted this historic trophy are Bristol Rovers and Middlesbrough. With the greatest of respect to the Pirates, I do not think they are about to break their duck.

It must be a long old time, if ever, since Boro were third favourites at this stage of the competition.

Call me optimistic. Call me irresponsible. Call me anything you like.

The title of this piece was not entirely correct. It should have read:

BORO WIN THE CUP FINAL

Riverside Red loyal and true

Riverside Red I wanna be like you

Singing your songs to follow your dream

And make your voice heard for your Middlesbrough team
