PUTTING THE BOOK IN (With inbuilt literary quiz) 7-10-07

With regard to the wonderful world of literature Mark Twain once commented; 'A classic is something that everybody wants to have read and nobody wants to read'.

For my own part, having thrice attempted James Joyce's Ulysses and been found wanting (less), and then been totally bemused by the pointlessness of J.R.R. Tolkien's tomes (Bilbo Bloody Baggins - 'av it you slag), I agree with Mr T totally.

As I always did with the other Mr T. Him with the sandwich bar down the industrial estate.

The secret of popular writing is to keep it like a Mike Tyson scrap, short and punchy and let the reader feel he's in with a shout...

Thus having disabused two of the literati glitterati I will without further ado assign famous relevant book titles to our Premiership pretenders.

Some refer to the managers, some to the club's status and a couple just putting the book in. The usual suspects. Sozay all of us.

As can be seen, all are not classics but are well written and well read. Though not perhaps as yet by you.

All you have to do is to supply the names of the authors.

ARSENAL First Among Equals (7,6) 1984
MAN UNITED The Sound and the Fury (7,8) 1929
MAN CITY Wuthering Heights (5,6) 1847
LIVERPOOL The Power and the Glory (6,6) 1940
NEWCASTLE Remembrance of Things Past (6,6) 1913
CHELSEA The Outsider (6,5) 1942
WEST HAM Crime and Punishment (6,10) 1866
ASTON VILLA The Big Sleep (7,8) 1939
EVERTON Smiley's People (4,2,5) 1979
BLACKBURN Heart of Darkness (6,6) 1902
PORTSMOUTH The Go-Between (1,1,7) 1953
WIGAN Wilt (3,6) 1976
BORO The Pilgrim's Progress (4,6) 1678
BIRMINGHAM The Trial (5,5) 1925
SUNDERLAND Great Expectations (7,7) 1847
READING The Invisible Man (1,1,5) 1897
FULHAM Misery (7,4) 1987
TOTTENHAM War and Peace (3,7) 1865
BOLTON For Whom the Bell Tolls (6,9) 1940
DERBY Brave New World (6,6) 1932

Still here then? Good. How did you do pre-Google? It was not the easiest quiz in the world so you will be judged mercifully on your totals.

0-3 How IS Biffo these days?
4-7 Roger Melly still on't telly?
8-11 Good effort. Could do better
12-16 Who's a clever boy then
17-20 Holidaying alone? - Yep, no-one likes a know-all

The bottom line is you read proper books or you don't. You can be bothered or you can't. Which brings me back to the famous quote from book publisher to wannabe author...

'Thank you for sending me a copy of your book. I'll waste no time in reading it'

I know the feeling. Just wish I'd wasted no time in writing it...
